Swiss One Step Closer to
Full Marijuana Legalization
While the Dutch have
always had a reputation for social tolerance, the Swiss have always been a
conservative society. An orderly and peaceful
society is, after all, vital to a country that is famous throughout the world
for its banks. Not exactly a hot-bed of radicalism, the Swiss have been
experimenting with harm-reduction policies for some years now, and experiencing
great success. Now, after seeing the results from its heroin maintenence policy
for addicts, and the acceptence by the public of these sort of policies, the
Swiss have moved ahead in their marijuana policy as well.
Following up on a commitment to legalizing
marijuana made last October, the Swiss government
recently endorsed a draft
law that would legalize the consumption of marijuana and hashish and provide
for a limited number of retail outlets. According to a poll
commissioned by the Swiss government, one
in four Swiss citizens age 15-24
regularly smoke marijuana. The proposed law is meant to reflect the
reality of modern Swiss society. Criminalizing a large portion of the
population is not viewed as an
appropriate use of resources by the Swiss
government. If passed as expected the law will allow for local
marijuana cultivation and limited sales.
Meanwhile, in America, the government hesitates
even to allow the dying to seek relief from suffering by using marijuana. Makes
one wonder who has the radical drug policy.
