Statement of Purpose
Our unifying belief, that the war on drugs has failed, grounds our fundamental purposes: to effect substantial change in United States drug policy; to promote, support, and engage in open discussion of alternatives to the War on Drugs, to form numerous chapters that challenge citizens and local political leaders to rethink drug policies; and to help enact pragmatic legislation that reduces harm and preserves liberties.
ReconsiDer began in Syracuse, New York in 1992. We are a non-partisan, grassroots membership organization that works by consensus and through the volunteer efforts and contributions of our members. We are a
New York State not-for-profit corporation with IRS 501-C-3 tax exempt status.
Since 1995 the contributions of members and sympathizers have been supplemented by grants from the Drug Policy
Foundation and the Lindesmith Center.
We distribute a print periodical, the ReconsiDer Quarterly, a cablecast TV
show, and this website. Their purpose is to maintain contact with members, provide a forum for an unfettered discussion of drug policy issues, and to communicate to public officials that there is a growing, active, informed and determined constituency that wants fundamental changes in our drug policies.
